  • As broadband becomes more readily available in Japan CompuFarm intends to steer some of the massive concentrations of computing needs from the country's two largest metropolitan areas, Tokyo and Osaka, out into Japan's less congested but economically disadvantaged rural regions.

The first test cases will occur in Fukushima Prefecture, approximately 200 miles north of Tokyo.

This relocation of computer infrastructure and services will allow CompuFarm to leverage reduced computing costs and other overhead for its clients by taking advantage of cheaper land, housing, and labor. At the same time, the rural areas will benefit from the development of new computer-related occupations that will supplement the existing agrarian economies.

In addition to addressing the Japanese version of the "digital divide," the redistribution of service-based technology from the urban metroplex out into rural communities will also have the added advantage of distributing the risks associated with the very real threats of Japan's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. While the central government is slow to act, and the rural governments lack the required expertise to attempt these moves on their own, CompuFarm is ideally positioned to undertake technology transfers and innovative rural rejuventation.
